    The first stage of technology is the invention of a tool, like a hammer, that gives a physical task a mechanical advantage, enabling the user to perform physical labor more effectively and more quickly.
    The invention of the machine, a tool that partially replaces human physical work and simply requires control of its operations, such as vehicles and lights, represents the second technical stage.
    Automation, the third and last stage of technological development, is a device that replaces the need for human control with an automatic algorithm. Pacemakers and digital watches are two examples.
